Batya Susan Weinbaum

Born in 1952 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, an early memory was crawling into a rabbit's cage to become one with the animals. At three, we trekked to Terre Haute, Indiana in the family station wagon. In our new home, I recall climbing up an apple tree in a large backyard, and running off on a horse with a girlfriend. I wrote my first book, The Curious Courtship of Women's Liberation and Socialism, published by South End Press, in 1978. I moved to New York City where I had many jobs such as working for Gael Greene, food critic for New York Magazine; Phyllis Chesler, author of Women and Madness; and the Union of Radical Political Economics. I studied writing with Alix Kate Shulman and Marguerite Young, and began publishing fiction and poetry. My first fiction publication was in John Crawford's West End Review. I frequented the Women's Salon, and published in Heresies.
